About

The Kirkfield Lift Lock (Lock 36) is a historic hydraulic lift lock situated a few kilometres north of the Village of Kirkfield, Ontario, at the highest elevation point along the Trent-Severn Waterway at approximately 256 metres above sea level. Constructed between 1900 and 1905, it uses metal frames rather than concrete towers to guide its metal tubs, distinguishing it from the nearby Peterborough Lift Lock. The lock is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site, a 386-kilometre waterway managed by Parks Canada that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. On-site facilities include overnight mooring, washrooms, potable water, and a picnic area, and the site is set within the Carden Alvar, a habitat noted for rare species.
